I’ll be honest… I HATE talking about this, but it needs to be said…

Sometimes readers don't like the expected formulas in a book based on genre. Instead, they appreciate the surprise with slight alterations and additional themes. I've ruined my partner's movie watching because after viewing with me for so many years (and putting up with my commentary), they can now guess what will happen most of the time. Every once in a while though, we're shocked by a movie twist, and I love experiencing that in books too.

As a genre hopping reader, it's easy to often want certain parts of one genre to enter another. I'm also a genre bender when I write. I just can't help it. Publishers and mainstream seem to desire the formulaic approach. What are your thoughts? Do you prefer when books follow designs based on their genre or are you a genre bender too? It's the age-old adage, conform to be successful or don't and fail. I've always been a bit of a rebel though, so we'll see.

Just keep at it until you perfect something, right? Have you read or watched anything recently that surprised you? I'd love to hear about it.
